    • I'm a 15 years old teenage boy and yes i'm from Singapore .

      I'm studying in a secondary school .

I'm in the academic course because i cannot be bothered with my studies when i reached primary 3.

I started to buck up during Secondary two and do quite fairly well till now with the exception of English .

Yes , English has always been a hard subject for me . I speaks hokkien with my grandmother and

sometime with my parents. But i usually speaks Chinese with my parents, peers and friends in real life but

English on messenger, gaming, etc . Even though there is or there isn't the new criteria that we need to

pass English,Math and four others subject (Correct me if i'm wrong) But still i've to pass English to get into

a polytechnic or a CI .I'm really worry i will flunk it T.T I would like to ask if i get like 40-49marks for English

during O-level or N-level will i be able to get promoted still ? Or just a small gap like 4-5marks .

    • worry about ur "N" lvl before ur "O"
      u r sec 3 this year no?
if i'm not wrong, your batch will be the first to adopt the new system
for the criteria of promoting to sec 5 which is "5subjects under 20points"
      passing english is a must.

as for your question. it will depends on the course
i have a fren hu failed english but got into poly
of course, failing english will eliminate ur chances of getting
into the more popular courses. and also they see ur scores in "grades"
      not "marks"

    • Listen to english channel, watch english shows, read english newspaper. Singapore has so much english content. Just be courageous and reach out and speak English ... even if its broken.. you will improve slowly but steadily

    • English..

I  have classmates from china who do not even know the alphabets and they used 1 year to master it, why can't you? When you have so much advantage over them?

If you are afraid of sounding funny when speaking to your usual friends that you converse to in Mandarin, don't change. Instead, make more friends and some of them are bound to be english-speaking kind and you can speak english to them, switch back to mandarin when you talk to your usual friends.

What i miss about secondary school is the compo writing! I love to write compos but it's a pity its always red with grammar mistakes haha. If I had known earlier how important it is, I would have taken grammar lessons in primary school seriously. I just hate it when I'm speaking to somebody about something and I have to stop because I'm unsure about the grammar part to use. To use "has" or "have" or "had"? and many other subject verb agreement blablabla.

You do not need to write bombastic chim words to earn good grades in O levels. It is the grammar that matters the most. You can learn all the super duper long chim words but when you use them, you are wrong about the tense, you will not get any marks for it. Better off using simple words and making the sentence perfect.

Start now young man! Get a cheap 50 cents lined book and start reading. Whenever you come across a good phrase in a book, description wise, argument wise, or whatever you find it impressive, write them down, review them and use them in your composition.

K its late but I want to say something else. Do you have any aspiration? Like to become a Lawyer? A doctor? or anything you want to be?

Because at 15 years old, it is the right age to think of what you want to be in the future. Many teenages failed to see past the veiled and focused on the wrong thing. 24/7 online gaming, BGR, branded stuff, blablabla.

At 15, you may be young but you can make life changing decision. Set a goal, study hard and you can achieve it when you are 21? 23?, thats pretty young after serving NS.

I always wanted to be a Doctor but I regretted not studying hard enough during my secondary school days and I focused on the wrong stuff, it's a sad thing to look back now and realise just how much opportunity escaped my grasp.
